BE INVOLVED
“A school district is only as strong as its community support. Input and engagement from the community is essential in making sure all of our students reach their educational goals”
— Heather Little
8 Ways
You Can Support Your Student, School and District
1.
MAKE SPACE & TIME TO SUPPORT LEARNING AT HOME
Create a space at home for homework. It should be a quiet space for regular home learning. Know your teacher’s homework policy and help make sure the deadlines are met. Engage with your child during their homework.
2.
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TEACHERS & SCHOOL
Attend parent-teacher conferences and events at the school. Make time to read the teacher communications. Staying engaged with your student’s teacher and staff – especially the Principal is the best way to advocate for your student’s success.
3.
KNOW WHAT YOUR STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO LEARN & HOW THEY WILL BE ASSESSED
Talk to your child’s teacher to understand how learning will work and be tested in the classroom. State testing takes place at different times in the year. Ask your teacher how you can best set-up your child for success.
4.
VOLUNTEER AT THE SCHOOL & JOIN THE PTA
Every school in AUSD has an active, vibrant, and engaged PTA. Alameda also has an island-wide umbrella PTA – called PTAC. In addition to the PTA organizations, there are booster clubs for band and sports that also uplift each schools’ programs. Volunteering for any of these doesn’t have to take a lot of time – often times there are one-time events or activities that need help.
You can also help by joining the School Site Council (SSC) or the English Learner Advisory Committees (ELAC). Each school has these committees and councils that help advise the school and support better programs for ALL students.
5.
ENGAGE IN THE DECISION-MAKING & ADVOCACY EFFORTS IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Your input is critical. Attend PTA and School Site Council meetings where decisions will be made and discussed for your school. The SSC meeting decide the priorities of the LCFF spending for your school and are often looking for participants.
Participate or watch AUSD Board of Education meeting that are held at least once a month.
6.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Find out about after-school enrichment programs provided by the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) and other community partners like Girls Inc. Island City, Boys and Girls Club of Alameda, Alameda Point Collaborative, and others. Partake in free programs offered by the local library and the school districts workshops throughout the school year.
7.
JOIN DISTRICT COMMITTEES & ROUND TABLES
There are many opportunities to sit on various committees with the district that address everything from bond oversight or homework policies, to strategic planning and dress codes. Lookout for AUSD news about requests for committee members.
8.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
Read the Parents Handbook for AUSD. It is important to know the policies and procedures - it allows you to be ahead of the curve in meetings.
